BUT HE WASHED A HOMELESS GUY’S FEET

December 27, 2013

This kind of thing is why I can’t really get behind all the liberal fawning over Pope Francis. It’s great that he publicly advocates the kinds of social justice-y things the Church has allegedly believed since the Victorian era, and I’m utilitarian enough just applaud liberal Catholics and run with them to some extent, but I can’t pretend that’s the end of the story. If you come to good conclusions through crazy bullshit reasoning, you’re going to have no defense against other kinds of crazy bullshit beliefs.

I’m not well enough versed in Catholic thought to know whether Francis or the last Pope was more “right” within their own framework — maybe it’s both, if they were sitting in The Chair — but that’s kind of the point. It’s all so completely arbitrary and disconnected from anything resembling the real world that there’s no way for someone who thinks religion is a good way to look at things to say that Francis’ ideas are better than Benedict’s, or a Methodist’s, or a Baptist’s, or a Muslim’s, or a Christian Scientist’s or a Scientologist’s.

I say chuck it all and replace it with philosophy or something. It will save a lot of people a lot of grief, not to mention let them sleep in on Sundays.
